And The Winner Is….

in Uncategorized on 22/10/13

I know you’re all waiting with baited breath to learn who the winner of my very first blog contest giveaway is.  It’s like waiting to see what will happen on the next episode of “Breaking Bad”, isn’t it? They don’t call me Callie Suspense Rebekah Feyen for nothin’, folks.

First, the judges.

Hadley Grace Feyen will be seven tomorrow, or maybe seventeen. I’m not sure yet.

And this one enjoys all things tulle, chocolate milk in a “little for real Starbucks cup,” and sparkly lip gloss.

She’s not high maintenance at all.

So here’s what I did.  All the entries were typed up and printed out for the girls to see.  I left out the names because some of the participants are known by the H’s.  I read each out loud and then asked for their comments.

My friend and first Creative Nonfiction teacher, Lindsey Crittenden, wrote, “I love this prompt, and I love to see what words are found. Some of the best words have just one you-know-what. (Cheat?) Thank you for this. I’ll share.”

“Oh, Mama, I LOVE this one.” Harper said.

“What do you like about it?”

“I just love that she used the word ‘share.’  Mama?  Are my lips still sparkly or do I need more lip gloss?”

“I think you’re fine, Harper.”

“OK, well, I’m going to put some more on just to make sure.”

Hadley checked everyone to make sure you all only used one syllable words.  Oops!  Somebody didn’t follow the rules, Valerie!

The girls loved Sarah’s and Mary’s.  Absolute silence after I read their pieces, and I’m not surprised.  They were beautiful.  Hadley said, “I can’t stop thinking about that tiny gold bird,” when she responded to Mary’s and Harper told me she wanted to be one of the kids on a walk in Sarah’s entry.  “I really liked the daytime part,” she said.  And then she put on more lip gloss.

Hadley and Harper really did a great job and it was all going so well until Dr. Hartemink stepped up to the plate.

Hadley said, “Oh my goodness, I HAVE to read that out loud.”

Harper begged Hadley to, “Read it again! Read it again!  Mama, EVERYONE is going to like that one.”  I mean, look. She forgot about her lip gloss and everything.

I can’t repeat what Alison wrote.  My mom won’t let me. Furthermore, I NEVER use bad words and I never EVER laugh at jokes about body parts or what comes out of them.

So Alison gets the funniest prize, but there was one more that the girls talked quite a bit about, and that was Jennifer’s.  She wrote, “red, orange, green, brown are/the taste of fall in my mouth/so sweet, tart, soft, crisp.”  Hadley said she felt like she was jumping in a leaf pile and then eating an apple.  And Harper loved the word, “tart.”

So we have two winners.  Alison and Jennifer.  You both can have your choice of something from my Etsy shop.  Email me your choices and I’ll get them ready for you right away.

The rest of you, thank you so much for participating and for sharing the contest on the World Wide Web.  I loved reading all the comments.  You’re all lovely, lovely friends.

for the record, that was my kids. i have no idea where they learned such things. had i known your kids were the judges i might have left out my comment on paps. oh, and my girls are also OBSESSED with glitter lip gloss. and reapplying every twenty seconds… on the plus side, it could make for some pretty inexpensive christmas presents.

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
