I’m sure you’re aware I know very little about sports, but Saturday’s game at Camden Yards was probably the most exciting baseball game I’ve been to. The Tigers hit so many home runs against the Orioles I lost count. There were four in one inning, including a grand slam.
Look how happy Jesse was.
Still reading each night before bed. I love this little ritual. The girls have been requesting poetry and chapter books lately. I didn’t realize how horrifying Shel Silverstein was. Geez, dude. Calm down with the nightmarish poems. Am I right? Or have I just gone wacky in my old age?
The girls have an elaborate game of school going on these days. They read stories, they give homework assignments, they have time outs and snack time. There’s even a principal and nurse’s office.
And Little Sister waits for Big Sister to come home from school. Because it’s just not as fun when she’s not around. The dinos just can’t replace Hadley.

I remember playing school like that. 🙂 I’m the oldest, so I was always the one in charge, making the others do their work!
My daughter’s totally getting into chapter books now too (also makes it easier to request “one more story” when it’s only another “chapter” and not another “book”. Sneaky girl. Just started one of the Magic Treehouse books…a new series for me, so I usually want “one more” chapter too, so we can find out what happens next! 🙂

Hadley’s obsessed with the Magic Treehouse series. Actually, that’s what we will start book club this summer. And yes, I was always the one in charge when we were playing school. Funny how that doesn’t seem like the case when I was actually teaching. Ha!

How funny that you are reading Shel Silverstein with your kids too. I just wrote about this last night, ironically. My kids love Shel Silverstein. Lydia asked for another collection for her birthday. We are reading from the collection I have from my childhood, which makes me smile. He is strange, though, it’s true.

My kids love him, too. And I’m careful not to say, “Man, he’s freaking me out!” because I don’t want them to be afraid. I’m trying to remember what it was that gave me pleasure about his poetry when I was a kid. I LOVED his poems. We’re reading the same books that I had when I was a kid and it’s fun to see the marks I made back then next to the poems that were my favorite. It was more than just the rhythm and rhyming. I’m actually sad that they scare me now. Might be a next essay! 🙂

We got out Shel Silverstein to read with Max recently…and then had to hide them away because it’s a little much for him right now. So I totally get where you are coming from!
