A Review

Harper, Bear, and I had the honor of catching a mid-morning showing of a Dr. Seuss mash-up performed by some of DC’s finest 4 and 5 year olds.

Harper and I happen to know one of the performers quite well so we didn’t want to miss a chance to see her work.

Because she and I go way back, I had the opportunity to be in on the behind the scenes preparations.  There was lots of discussion over whether one should actually eat green eggs and ham, or who exactly Foo Foo the Snoo is. Ms HGF likes to really understand the entire story before she performs.

“This is going to be a real challenge,” she told me one night over apple juice and animal crackers.  Dressed in pink sweats and a matching sweatshirt, a tank top peeking just above the zipper of her hoodie, she didn’t look stressed.

“What do you mean?” I inquired.

“Well, I have to be the drummer tomorrow.  Everyone else will play the maracas and I have to drum.  I don’t think I can do it.  Sometimes I have to hit the drum twice and sometimes I have to do it three times.  It’s going to be tough. I hope I remember the right times to hit the drum.”

“How did you get to be the drummer?”

“I was the star the day we picked the parts. The teacher picked me to be the drummer.”

“It’s hard to be the star sometimes,” I told her.

“It really is,” she responded munching on an animal cracker.

Harper and I had backstage passes after the performance and we got to party with the cast afterwords.

Pausing to reflect on the life cycle of the penguin. I'm pretty sure Harper will thank me tremendously for documenting a rather bad habit she's picked up recently.

The performance was fantastic.  It had everything you could want in a Dr. Seuss show – laughter, drama,  a bit of confusion, and lots and lots of rhyming.  I even got to wear the hat.

It looks like a really fun day. I suppose you’re lucky that your star chose not to be a method actor and channel the mindset and behavior of Cat in the Hat. Your house would have ended up a disaster area!

Patrick, don’t think that has not been attempted! I think that is why Hadley and Harper like that cat in the first place! 🙂

Looks like such a fun day! 🙂 They’ll always remember that you made the time to come and cheer them on. ( And yup…my girlie has that habit too!)

I stopped trying to follow any kind of math logic years ago. It hurts my brain too much.
Can’t wait to see you in a couple of weeks!
