Survey Says

in Uncategorized on 22/03/12

For the past several days Hadley has asked me to create a survey for her: a list of several questions and small activities that she can complete.  My mom used to make them for me and I loved them.  I still get a kick out of filling those things out at doctors offices or when we visit churches.  That’s normal, right?

Here are some samples of Hadley’s handiwork:

Hadley’s class is studying Dr. Seuss right now, so we are all about his books.  Can I just express my opinion regarding The Cat in the Hat?  It’s terrifying!  This strange cat comes n the house, the kids are CLEARLY suspicious (as is the fish) but the cat never leaves.  And then he brings Thing 1 and Thing 2 and things get really out of hand.  Sure, he cleans up all his things, and there’s rhyming and all that but the end is really what gets me. The narrator wonders whether he should tell his mom about his visitor. What would you do if your mother asked you? I always turn to the girls and says, “You will TELL your mother is what you’re gonna do!”

Also, I cannot stand One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.  I know.  I’m a jerk with no imagination but that book makes no sense.

Back to Hadley’s stuff. This picture is the top half of the survey pictured above. For those of you who are really interested, her favorite pizza topping is “olive oil.”  And the reason there are two names at the top is because she wanted her glow in the dark dinosaur to participate, too.  Apparently the dino is 5 and her name is Sana.

I love looking at Hadley’s work, but this one is my favorite:

She wants to be a mommy when she grows up.  Be still my suspicious of Dr. Seuss heart.

Callie, this article is great! I totally hate one fish two fish as well. The one Dr. Seuss book I enjoy reading with Aiden is Green Eggs and Ham. I always remind him of that book when it comes time to trying new foods.

Your surveys are great! I am going to try these with Aiden.

Thanks, Mindy! I’m glad I’m not the only person who isn’t a fan of One Fish. 🙂 Hadley’s teacher made green eggs and ham last week for her class. She was really scared to try it but she told me she liked them. Maybe I should remind her of that when she doesn’t want to eat her broccoli.

This is so funny…b/c at the end of Cat, I always say “You tell your Mom the truth!” 🙂

Oh good…I’m not the only one. Dr. Seuss has some gems, but some really strange ideas too! Love the survey ideas…must try these with my two kiddos. I love how they spell things at this age…it’s so amazing to watch their reading and writing skills develop!

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
