Right Now

{Celebrating} Harper turning 5 (don’t be jealous of my mad cake decorating skills), Hadley turning 7 and having the most fabulous fall weather in all the land.  Since we’ve moved to the DC area I think, this has to be the best fall ever and then the mid-atlantic region up and puts on another show again.  Darn you DC for… View Post

Golden Moment

in Uncategorized on 07/11/13

My teaching partner, Shannon, and I recently taught a class where we encouraged participants to make a to-do list for that day.  “The more mundane the task, the better,” I said. They obliged and then we asked them to write about doing one of these items on their list as though they are fully engaged in that activity. Shannon said… View Post

Reading an essay at Starbucks with Hadley and Harper

in Uncategorized on 05/11/13

It is a blustery afternoon; the kind of day in November where you know winter’s coming.  It’s on it’s way and the brilliant leaves scream it against the bright blue sky. The three of us, me, Hadley, and Harper, have a bit of cabin fever.  Jesse’s out of town and we are getting on each other’s nerves but we’re all… View Post

The first picture is a response from a writer friend of mine when I was freaking out about being in graduate school.  I said, “What was I thinking?!?!”  She told me what I was thinking, and now it sits on my computer. Some gifts for our niece from the girls.  Her nickname is Lulu but I’m not sure the girls… View Post

And The Winner Is….

in Uncategorized on 22/10/13

I know you’re all waiting with baited breath to learn who the winner of my very first blog contest giveaway is.  It’s like waiting to see what will happen on the next episode of “Breaking Bad”, isn’t it? They don’t call me Callie Suspense Rebekah Feyen for nothin’, folks. First, the judges. Hadley Grace Feyen will be seven tomorrow, or… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

Have a look around and be sure to subscribe to the blog. Thanks for stopping by!

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
