A Morning with George, Abraham, Thomas, Mozart, Hadley, and Flannery O’Connor

in Uncategorized on 11/03/14

Last week around 6:15 one morning, I was at the table trying to think about what to write about Flannery O’Connor’s prayer journal when Hadley struts in, fully dressed, swipes a piece of paper off a stack and says, “Dare me to draw something.” She was going on a field trip that day, so I say, “I dare you to… View Post

Birthday Celebrations

in Uncategorized on 06/03/14

Last Friday was Jesse’s birthday, and as luck would have it, Hadley had a half a day so we headed down to DC for the afternoon. Jesse took half the day off as well, and while we waited for him we enjoyed some hot chocolate at Caribou. We spent a few hours in the Natural History Museum, and that was… View Post

Ideas for Lent

in Uncategorized on 04/03/14

If you’re observing Lent, I’m sure you’ve decided by now what it is you’re giving up, or adding to your life in the next 40 days.  But in case you need some ideas, here are a few that have to do with reading. Paula Huston wrote a nice daily Lenten practice book called Simplifying the Soul that I read a couple… View Post

Things I Loved In February

in Uncategorized on 27/02/14

The month of February has been kind of grey and snowy and cold, but one afternoon this month the girls and I walked around Washingtonian Center to eat cupcakes and pick up some treats at Charming Charlies.  What is it that Jem says to Scout when she’s nervous about stepping on Boo Radley’s porch?  Something like, “I swear Scout, you… View Post

Standing Out Here For Practice

in Uncategorized on 25/02/14

On Friday Harper and I were working in the sunroom for a chunk of the day.  She was painting and I was thinking about Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and working on putting together some bookmarks for kids for an upcoming reading event at Hadley’s school. I have to write a paper on Dillard’s book, and it has to do with… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
