My Week(s) In Words

in Uncategorized on 09/01/15

Some from before Christmas break, and a couple after. Because mostly I wish I could say more than I do, and I feel bad about not being able to say (or write) what it is that would like to come out. Words take so much time. But maybe that isn’t a bad thing. Because while I was partial to Wil… View Post

January C + C Essay

in Uncategorized on 08/01/15

I’m over at Coffee + Crumbs today talking about Hadley’s aspirations to teach her classmates the song AND dance, “Gigilo.” What’s that? You don’t know about this song? Well, stop over. You’ll not only learn the words, but you’ll read a little story about a similar endeavor I pursued in second grade with some friends of mine. For us, it… View Post

What To Read In January

in Uncategorized on 06/01/15

When we left Chicago last week, it was 12 degrees. There’s something about walking outside in the morning and smelling twelve degree air that excites me. I suppose the tingling could be coming from fingers and toes beginning to sting, but there’s something more than that. Twelve degrees for me is nostalgic, for sure, but this sort of bitterness welcomes… View Post

Good Year

in Uncategorized on 18/12/14

It’s been a good year. We’ve tried ballet, and soccer. We got to the city for pizza and burgers and museums and triathlons. We got to climb on a ship at the mouth of the Mississippi. We got to stand behind a podium and tell a story. I adore the family I’m in. This week, I’m website hopping. It’s similar… View Post

Play In The Snow And Watch For Friends

in Uncategorized on 16/12/14

Harper wrote a story. It’s about a friend who recently moved away.   p. 5 – “When she left I gave her a wintery hug. p. 6 – “And she left. Waaaaa!” Yes, wouldn’t a snow party be grand? This last page slays me. “Well if you don’t have your friend then you can be mine or make new friends… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
