Arrested Development

in Uncategorized on 26/05/15

In high school, we had a five minute passing period to get from class to class. This seems like a reasonable amount of time, but we were always late. “We,” being the almost 2,000 high schoolers that made up Oak Park and River Forest High Schoool. We are the Huskies! And we are always late! So the administration decided that… View Post

Both, And. The 8th Graders

in Uncategorized on 21/05/15

I am to tell you good work, congratulations, and good luck in high school, and I will tell you these things, but first I want to tell you a secret: I had no plans to teach this year. All my lesson plans and “how to teach” books, everything I learned about teaching in college had all been thrown away years… View Post

{Sat} on the Metro going towards Farragut to watch this year’s Listen To Your Mother performance.  Nothin’ wrong with a Metro ride into the city. That’s what I always say. The performances were fantastic. There’s something special and brave about getting dressed up and telling and listening to stories. I wished I could’ve talked to each of the cast… View Post

The plan was to go fishing at Black Hills Regional Park, so I kept my camera close by because two girls who fish with princess fishing poles seemed like a good beginning to a story. I snapped photos and listened to Hadley and Harper while constructing a possible blog post. But the fish weren’t biting. It was one of the… View Post

Lemon Cornmeal Cake

in Uncategorized on 12/05/15

Let’s just say it wasn’t all that bad.* The cake, that is. I made it on a Thursday evening a few weeks back. It’s a lemon-cornmeal cake but there’s also 1 and 1/2 cups of chopped almonds so I don’t know why it’s not called “Lemon-Almond-Cornmeal Cake.” I guess you can’t fit everything into a title. Besides, it’s good to… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
