Fog

in Uncategorized on 21/11/16

“I was thinking of about you driving to Detroit this morning.” This is from the piano teacher. She always chats with me for a few minutes before and after the lessons. Before class today, she noticed I didn’t have my usual stack of papers to grade, and instead was holding a copy of Cheryl Strayed’s Wild. I picked it up at… View Post

Dead Hydrangeas

in Uncategorized on 15/11/16

The girls take piano lessons across the street from a house Jesse and I considered putting a bid on. We called it, “the beach house,” because it reminded us of the type of houses we’ve seen in OBX. We liked the house a lot, and if we hadn’t seen the home we are living in now, we probably would’ve put… View Post

Scatterfield Road and Defiance County

in Uncategorized on 02/11/16

To get to Anderson University from Ann Arbor, you have to drive through Defiance County. You’ll pass about ten signs for different towns in Defiance, and I wonder what it would be like to say you grew up in this place. “I am from Defiance,” I said in the car because it was just me and I wanted to hear… View Post

New Site, New Journal

in Uncategorized on 20/09/16

You want to know about this beautiful new website, but I want to tell you about the Reading Journals Becky and I made over the summer. They’re for you! Not kids. (Although, kids? Are you reading this? We have Reading Journals for you, too. Click on my “Products” tab and have a look.) Between you and me, I think these… View Post

Recipe: Boxed Use What You Got When You Write Yellow Cake with Chocolate Cream Frosting

in Uncategorized on 28/07/16

Okay so you’re writing schedule is all off. It’s summer and things just aren’t as efficient in the summer. Or maybe you’ve moved and it’s hard to lay down words because you have no sense of place right now. You have to use what you got even if it isn’t the real thing, or it doesn’t feel like the real… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
