Broken Eggs and Balance

in Uncategorized on 26/01/17

This is a picture of me trying to hold my balance at the Children’s Museum in downtown Ann Arbor. A couple of Sundays ago, we went to church, went to a breakfast nook called The Broken Egg, spent a few minutes in Literati, and then here, to try and do some balancing. The Broken Egg seems like a sad name,… View Post

Travel Happenings

“Something changes in us when we travel,” so says Volume 20 of Kinfolk magazine. “…it’s what we do with those memories once we’ve unpacked our suitcases that really makes a difference in the long run.” I ate the last of the Florida oranges this morning, its skin was thin and flecks of brown covered the orange so that it seemed more native… View Post

Around Here

in Uncategorized on 29/12/16

Around here we’re home improving and some of us get bored with such trivial matters, so we pull out silly putty and put it on various parts of our sibling’s body in Home Depot. Around here we have some work to do. Around here we’ve picked out flooring. Around here we’ve picked out paint, or, Harper’s picked it out. She… View Post

Songs to Employ

About a block from my school is a park with a playground. Several of the kids who walk home dash there after school, and watching sixth, seventh, and eighth graders goof off in that area is my favorite part of the day. I try not to look like a creeper, but I drive as slow as I can because watching… View Post

Tune My Art To Sing Thy Grace

in Uncategorized on 05/12/16

This is a picture of a coffee shop I found in the basement of a watch shop. It’s one of the most beautiful coffee shops in the world, I am sure of it. It’s quiet save for the humming of that melodious noise of perfect coffee drinks being prepared, and the soft sounds of Elliot Smith wondering about all things… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
