About A Book

in Uncategorized on 14/02/18

I want to write something about this book of mine that’s coming out, but I keep thinking about the night before the return to school after winter break.  All three of the Feyen girls’ lunch bags were opened and drying on the kitchen counter, and a cinnamon candle was lit to combat the two-week old cucumber smell that was festering… View Post

Build A Sentence

in Uncategorized on 08/02/18

“Mrs. Feyens I can’t work today because I’m not doing good because just now Maya tried to kill me on the tire swing.” “I did not try to kill you,” Maya says calmly, scraping nail polish off her nails. It’s hot pink with glitter in it. I like it. “Killing doesn’t happen in school,” Joe tells everyone. “Throwing up does…. View Post

Shades of Meaning

in Uncategorized on 08/01/18

Each month, I write a little column for my district’s newsletter capturing a little of what goes on in the libraries I work in. Here is this month’s essay: I was in 5th grade, in Ms. Savage’s class (Savage is an unfortunate name for a teacher, but I liked her), and we were cleaning out our desks, catching up on… View Post

Advent in the Church Bathroom

in Uncategorized on 18/12/17

In the women’s bathroom at church, there is a border of wall paper running just below the ceiling with the words, serenity, home, creativity, simplicity, and beauty on it. The words are printed in what looks like a medieval font, so there’s a seriousness to them; a sacredness to them. I read them while I’m waiting for a stall and… View Post

Free Range Eggs

in Uncategorized on 06/12/17

Hadley is making oatmeal, and I’m frying eggs for breakfast when Jesse walks into the kitchen and says he’s going for a run. “I wish I had time to run,” is my encouraging response. “How about this afternoon?” Jesse suggests pulling a hoodie over his head. I pull butter from the fridge, slice a pat off, and drop it into… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
