The Lord’s Prayer and the Humpty Dance

in Uncategorized on 24/05/18

At a recent Notre Dame football game, I learned that before they run out onto the field, the players recite the Lord’s Prayer. They say it fast. It’s not like a congregational prayer in church. Nobody’s trudging carefully through this, articulating every word. This is more like a chant one might spit out before walking on hot coals, or jumping out of… View Post

Dobby, Bellatrix, And Stories That Are Never “Just Stories”

in Uncategorized on 04/05/18

Dear Naomi, Your mom told me that the two of you read the scene in Harry Potter when Dobby dies. “He dies in the last sentence of the chapter!” she told me, and then she said the two of you considered reading further with the hope you both could get over the sadness quickly. She decided against it. “We sat… View Post

Where The Poems Are

in Uncategorized on 27/04/18

Cleaning the library feels like a guilty pleasure these days. The hour before school begins, I’m supposed to be working on truancy, or going over lesson plans for my small groups: CVC words, dipgraphs, finding main ideas to short passages – stuff that’s necessary. The necessary is boring me to tears, so I turn a jazz station on YouTube and… View Post

It Could’ve Been A Sycamore

in Uncategorized on 17/04/18

Last month when we were at Notre Dame, Hadley and Harper found a grand old tree, that was perfect for sitting in. However, the first spot to heft oneself up was about four feet from the ground. Plus, the tree seemed to be balding – its bark chipped off and a smooth, white surface made it difficult, I assume, to… View Post

Snowflakes and Magnolia Trees on Saturday Night

in Uncategorized on 11/04/18

The four of us are in the car, driving to Raleigh. We’ve taken a route in the hopes we’ll avoid a snowstorm in the mountains, and so far, it’s been successful. Long, but successful. We are literally driving over rivers and through the woods to get to Grandma’s house. We listened to The Golden Compass, and we stopped for Dairy… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
