Banana Crunch Muffins

in Uncategorized on 25/06/18

Hadley wants me to crack and peel her hard-boiled egg, and I am looking at three too-ripe bananas and thinking about banana bread. “I will if you pull out Ina Garten’s recipe for Banana Crunch Muffins,” I tell her. Banana bread is delicious. I throw in cinnamon and chocolate chips, and I’ve learned from Food 52 that whole fat, plain… View Post

Around Here

in Uncategorized on 20/06/18

Around here, a soccer team finished their season strong. This is a picture that was taken a few minutes after they learned they were the division champions. I love that their coaches didn’t tell them that’s what they were playing for until after the game. I love that instead, as the girls take the field, they yell, “Go out with… View Post

Finding Your Story In A Story

in Uncategorized on 11/06/18

{This is a little something I wrote for Ypsilanti Community School’s “Off the Shelf” newsletter.} The night before I interviewed for the At-Risk Literacy Specialist position at YIES and Perry, I asked Jesse what he thinks I should do if I’m asked about the teaching job I left three months earlier. “Should I even say anything?” I asked him…. Feyen Girls Read No. 2

in Uncategorized on 09/06/18

Harper: Finished up the last Harry Potter book – I think this is her third time reading the series. She also read No Cream Puffs, by Karen Day. “I like this book, because it was about baseball, and I love baseball! The characters were also really funny, and it takes place in Michigan!!!” (Harper loves exclamation points. I think she is, at… View Post

Kleenex For The Rest of Us

in Uncategorized on 30/05/18

Was it a Kleenex commercial that followed a few parents of Olympiads through their dark mornings, helping to pack bags with sports equipment and snacks, through the afternoons-turned-evening-turned-nights sitting on cold benches in the rain, in the snow, in the wasp-filled sunshine watching their very talented, very strong, very capable athletes do their thing? And it was all worth it… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
