Reading Journals – All About Me Pages

in books, journals, reading, summer, Uncategorized, writing on 02/07/13

I don’t want you to get the wrong idea and think I’m some sort of expert on how to get kids to read.  I have no clue how to do that.  I wasn’t what you’d call a reader growing up.  Have I told you that? Well, that’s a story for another day. I have learned a little trick from a… View Post

A Note to Butler’s Orchard

in summer, writing on 27/06/13

This is just to say we have eaten a few blueberries from the hedge instead of dropping them into buckets to be weighed Forgive us we were young and feeling young and the blueberries were the size of grapes warm and dark blue from the sun (Inspired by “This is just to say” by William Carlos Williams, Butler’s Orchard, and… View Post

Sometimes I Get A Good Feeling

in Uncategorized, writing on 20/06/13

Remember when you woke up one morning around the 17th or 18th week of pregnancy and thought, “Coffee sounds good?” Remember how relieved you felt at the thought? You walked to Starbucks a few blocks away from your apartment; the one in downtown Silver Spring that’s across the street from what used to be Borders. Since it was your day… View Post

Write What You Know

in Uncategorized on 18/06/13

A few weeks ago it was unseasonably cold for the DC area. The temperature read 60, but it wasn’t a 60 I was used to anymore. Ten years ago, I might’ve been wearing flip flops in this weather that was windy and raining, but not anymore. I still have that nasal-y Chicago accent, but sadly, I have lost my tolerance… View Post

Summer Reading Journals

in journals, reading, summer, Uncategorized on 13/06/13

How about a Summer Reading Journal? I made some for my girls. And for your kids too, if they’d like. There’s a place to make bookmarks. And a place to store words that are funny, descriptive, hard to understand, and words that should be used over and over again. There are places to write book reviews, draw pictures, and write about… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
