Robotic Surfing

in Uncategorized on 02/05/23

Have you heard about the robots that surf? They’re out in California. I heard Apple launched them. Or maybe it was Facebook. Anyway, the Robot Surfers, RSERS as they’re called, can do it better than any human and what’s more, they’re designed to make it look as if you’re doing it! But you don’t have to! Isn’t that fantastic?!?! You… View Post

Around Here: Week of April 23

I participated in a writing panel at my church. The woman to my right is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. Part of what makes her so funny is the fact that she says what she says in church. In front of God and the baptismal font and that huge Bible! She does not hold back. She uses… View Post

Cliffs Notes and Favorite Books

in Uncategorized on 27/04/23

I recently applied for a job to write the equivalent of Cliffs Notes for classic, YA literature, and poetry (would’ve been a pretty cool gig), but alas, I didn’t get it. However, one of the questions I was asked had to do with my favorite book when I was a teenager, and it was fun to think about and come… View Post

A Spent Storm: On Faith and Writing

in Uncategorized on 25/04/23

From the panel I got to be on at church: I have read tons of books on writing – how to write, why to write – I have an MFA in Creative Writing, I am in constant conversation with others about the craft, but no book has told me more about writing’s call – what it does, how it feels,… View Post

Swimming Towards Things Unseen

in Uncategorized on 20/04/23

Harper was confirmed in our church last night, and I wrote a little something to introduce her (because of course I did). Here are some things to tell you about Harper: She is an artist. She is a reader. She is a collector – of colored pencils, of scraps of paper, of rocks with the names of places she’s been…. View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
