Something Shared

A Devotion for the church I attend, First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor. I’m currently enrolled in a course titled, “Her Life Is Not Yours: Get Out Of Your Daughter’s Way.” I’ve been a student in the class since October 23, 2006 when all 9 pounds, 10 ounces of Hadley Grace was put in my arms and if she could’ve… View Post

Scene in a Library

in Uncategorized on 01/07/19

Last Thursday evening, I had the honor of reading from part of Twirl at the Oak Park Public Library in Oak Park, Illinois, which was the place my mom worked for years. Before I read, I said a bit about her work and its impact on my growing up. You would think that, given who my mom is, and where she… View Post

Monday Poetry Prompt

in Uncategorized on 03/06/19

Since last July, I’ve been writing weekly poetry prompts for Tweetspeak Poetry. It’s been a fun project, and I thought I’d start posting the links to them here in case anyone would like to try their hand at the genre. This week’s prompt has to do with noticing the world around us, asking questions about why things are the way… View Post

Where the Wild Things Are

in Uncategorized on 28/05/19

They’re in the library, and they’re waiting, some not so patiently, to come out and play. There are cows that insist on jumping and dancing on a chicken’s chair because they are ready to have some fun. There’s a wolf who continues to chase after pigs who’ve just built houses (granted, some of them haphazardly). We made cupcakes for him… View Post

If Stories Aren’t Enough

in Uncategorized on 20/05/19

Each month, the people who work in the libraries in the Ypsilanti Community Schools create a newsletter to share the work we’re doing in the building. This is my contribution: The day I read A Rainbow of My Own in the Perry library, there was a lockdown at the school because of a nearby shooting that left one boy dead. The other boy… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

Have a look around and be sure to subscribe to the blog. Thanks for stopping by!

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
