One Book + One Pair of Jeans, Three Ways

in Uncategorized on 21/01/20

Recently, I received a message from the Michigan Department of Education asking me to complete a survey responding to two questions: 1) Why did I leave teaching, and 2) What would it take to bring me back. (For the record, this survey went out to everyone who left teaching, and not just me. I don’t want anyone getting the wrong… View Post

Five Notes About Chicago

in Uncategorized on 17/01/20

We met Celena and Nick at Mercadito’s, a Mexican Restaurant in the North River area. We ate tacos and guacamole, and talked  about our kids growing up, and work and probably sounded much like both of our parents when Celena and I were our kids’ ages – almost 30 years ago. But no time has passed. Celena and I are… View Post

New Workshop Beginning January 13

in Uncategorized on 08/01/20

I’m excited to be a part of a new writing workshop put on through Exhale and beginning this Monday. I’ll be teaching with my friends and colleagues Anna Jordan, N’tima Preusser, and Sonya Spillmann. The workshop is a storytelling workshop called “Known.” The idea behind the title is this: we know each other because of the stories we tell.  If… View Post

Hope Like A Wrestling Match

in Uncategorized on 17/12/19

The following is an Advent devotion I wrote for my church. It is based on Psalm 146: 5-10. It is the children’s Bible, the one I’ve had since I was around seven, that I turned to find the story of God wrestling with Jacob. I attempted to search for it in my big Bible, but other than the Old Testament,… View Post

Scene on a Morning in Advent

in Uncategorized on 08/12/19

December 1 begins the night before when I tell the girls that tomorrow morning, instead of coming downstairs with books, instead of grabbing their screens and sitting down for breakfast, I want them to bring their Bibles and their “Write the Word” journals. “For Advent,” I say, but really it’s more like a question. “For Advent?” and I guess I… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
