Martha Stewart, the Irish, lifting up my soul, and other dramatic things.

in Uncategorized on 21/02/21

Here is a devotion I wrote for Lent. It is based on Psalm 25. To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me. Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them… View Post

Something You Are, and Something You Do

in Uncategorized on 17/02/21

Today’s Word of the Day, according the email I receive from Merriam-Webster, is “durable.” It means, “able to exist for a long time without significant deterioration.” Durable comes from the Latin verb, “durare,” which means, “to last.” In English, it’s an adjective. Since its meaning is used in two different parts of speech, one could conclude that durable is something… View Post

Women Are Moving

in Uncategorized on 12/02/21

I don’t know the people on our street well, or at all, really. I should, I know this. I’m a terrible person probably, and I won’t try to defend my lack of neighborly prowess. Three women though, whose names I do not know have brought me a subtle joy throughout the years we’ve called Ann Arbor our home. (It makes… View Post

Thoughts on Discomfort + Photos of the Writing Room

in Uncategorized on 08/02/21

“What if,” I said to Jesse – quietly, carefully, – “we didn’t make this part into a closet?” I took a step back, ready not so much for an argument, but for a series of questions that would unpack a well-thought out plan for what in the world this space could possibly be if not a closet. “And do what… View Post

From Inspiration to Habit: A Writing Course

in Uncategorized on 05/02/21

Once, during a writing workshop I was co-leading, a writer asked me if writing was more inspiration or habit. “Or a mixture of both?” she added. It’s a great question, and one I think she answered with her third question. I write because I’m inspired (or haunted, sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference), but it is the habit –… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
