Any mother will tell you that it’s hard to get things done during the day.  The obvious reasons are things like: taking kids to school or activities, breaking up fights, changing diapers, figuring out a meal that everyone will eat, making sure your child remembers to put her underpants on when she’s getting ready for school.  Is that last one… View Post

Say, “Uncle”

in Uncategorized on 22/09/11

Recently Geoff and Kellee came to visit us. We went here: and ate these: We did a little antiquing with Diego in Leesburg. However, these pictures are my favorite: A few days ago I lifted Harper up as I high as I could reach and she said, “No, Mommy.  That’s for Uncle Geoff.  It’s what he does.”  And when Hadley… View Post

Closer to Fine

Last week, after I picked Hadley up from school, the girls and I drove to the zoo.  It wasn’t too hot out so we ate our lunches with the windows rolled down while listening to the “Silly Songs” CD as loud as I could stand it. We saw a couple of panda bears. We followed elephant tracks to find the giant… View Post

Clumps of Moments

in Uncategorized on 16/09/11

This post is inspired from an excerpt of the poem Small Things by Anna Kamienska: “It’s not from the grand but from every tiny thing that it grows enormous as if Someone was building Eternity as a swallow its nest out of clumps of moments” Our clumps of moments this week: a mixture of sugar, and butter, and vanilla while… View Post

Going on a walk with Zelly

in Uncategorized on 14/09/11

I could not wait for When Life Gives You O.J. to come out.  A few years ago, I listened to Erica Perl read about a girl who agreed to walk an orange juice jug as if it were a dog, and I was amusingly hooked. But it wasn’t so much because I hoped Zelly, the main character, would get a real dog. I… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

Have a look around and be sure to subscribe to the blog. Thanks for stopping by!

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
