Homestead Farms

in Uncategorized on 12/10/11

I’ve decided that the field trip to the farm/orchard/pumpkin patch is officially The Preschooler’s Rite of Passage.  Indeed, it is a “must do” if you’re in the digits before 5….perhaps after 5, too. The one we went to this morning was around before George Washington was president.  Nice tidbit o’ information, me thinks. I love this picture.  They’re looking at… View Post

Mushrooms and Friendship

in Uncategorized on 10/10/11

Hadley wrote this to her friend Maya and asked me to mail it to her.  My first thought was to pray that her mom wouldn’t think we were complete weirdos.  I imagined the two of them sitting down together to read a note from Hadley, and the strange look that would surely come across their faces as they learn she… View Post

Halloween Came Early

in Uncategorized on 06/10/11

When we lived in the midwest, I had a rule for myself about wearing turtlenecks. I couldn’t wear them until it was October.  I love turtlenecks, and back then, owned a ridiculous amount several of them.  Turtlenecks sweaters, turtlenecks shirts….I’m pretty sure I owned a turtleneck tank top but rarely wore it because it made me confused. Now that we’re… View Post

Her Love is Real

in Uncategorized on 04/10/11

Hadley spelled this out the other day, and I thought it deserved a little tribute, in the style of Denise Huxtable and her poem “Their Love is Real.” Indeed. When she puts a Barbie Doll in my boot and neglets to tell me about it- Hadley’s OK. When she comes into our bedroom in the middle of the night to tell us her… View Post

At the Park

in Uncategorized on 29/09/11

I have always been pretty strategic in choosing the parks the girls and I go to.  The playground needs enough things for each to do, and I need to be able to see them all the time. This park, though pretty small, is difficult to supervise both the H’s.  There’s a tall bridge in the back, that I can’t see them… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
