It’s The Eyes

in Uncategorized on 31/10/11

My sophomore year of college, my roommate and I made a mix tape to fall asleep to.  We’d press “play,” climb up the ladder to our lofts and fall asleep to singers like Dave Matthews, Cowboy Junkies, and Sarah McLaughlin. Natalie Merchant was among the artists we chose to lull us to sleep, and she sang a song that always… View Post

On the morning Hadley turned 5, she came into our bedroom and said, “Goodbye four, hellooooooooo FIVE!”  That seemed like an appropriate way to usher in the Big 5.  She then asked if she was in fact 5, and I told her yes.  I didn’t want to say that actually, it would be 3:02pm when she would officially turn a… View Post

Ain’t No Party Like a Double H Party

in Uncategorized on 25/10/11

There was a party. It had face-painting. There was hopscotch, and bowling, and bubbles. We built our own cupcakes with sprinkles and candles on them. There were “real” cupcakes, too. There was Pin the Tail on the Donkey. And there were presents. All this was to celebrate two little girls we know who are turning 3 and 5. When I… View Post

There’s A Sermon In Here Somewhere

Harper set up a tightrope for her guys to walk on. Everybody lined up because they were excited to give it a try. Some were so excited they fell down. I think the guy in blue pants is STAFF. Anyway, everything was set for the big event until Harper started yelling, “OH JESUS!  JESUS!  HE’S HUNGRY!  HE CAN’T DO THE… View Post

in Uncategorized on 18/10/11

I got a phone call from my doctor’s office telling me that since I was about three years overdue, they would induce me on October 23.  I should be at the hospital at 6am ready to go. “That’s great, but you can’t get me in any sooner?” (Because, you know, isn’t this just like getting a haircut?) “No, but don’t… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
