A Season of Waiting

in Uncategorized on 23/11/22

For Christmas in 1987, my Aunt Joyce and Uncle Ron gave me Cynthia Rylant’s Children of Christmas: Stories for the Season. It’s a book of six stories that are brutally heart-wrenching. You are living alone on a Christmas tree farm, keeping watch for the tree that didn’t get picked. You are a little girl at a diner with your father,… View Post

Darling Files 002: Friendship, Motherhood, and the 50 Shades of Grey Series

in Uncategorized on 14/11/22

It is somewhere around 2010, and I have a friend named Hannah. Our friendship began literally, in the preschool carpool line. Hannah got out of her car and walked up to mine and started talking to me like we were old friends, and like I am an approachable, friendly person. Since then, we shared driving our respective children back and… View Post

Looking To What Was To Have Faith In What Will Be

in Uncategorized on 04/11/22

My soul praises the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, because he has looked with favor on the humble condition of his servant. Luke 1: 46-48 I’m sure you’ve heard of the highly sensitive person, and I know you’ve heard of people who have anxiety. I am both. God gave me a two for one… View Post

A Toast For 50 Years

in Uncategorized on 02/11/22

Years ago, like decades, I heard Jesse talking to Geoff after a break-up. They were on the phone, so I only heard half of the conversation, but here’s how it went:  Jesse, because his nickname that he doesn’t know about until just now is “Mr. Facts,” likes to move forward from an event by assessing with the emotion of a… View Post

A Really, Really, REALLY Scary Story

in Uncategorized on 25/10/22

Please enjoy this scary story written by yours truly, age 8. Written by Callie Rebekah Lewis. Illustrated by Callie Lewis. Same person, “Rebekah” is a lot of letters, though. Also, I appreciate the phrase, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover,” because flowers in soft primary colors with a white background does not really scream, “TERROR.” I think this is… View Post

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
