Sunday evening I took a horrible fall whilst on a run. Hadley came to pick me up, Jesse drove me to urgent care where the nurse literally backed away from me and said, “You’re gonna need to go to the ER.” So Jesse drove me there where we waited for a good long time. Around 9:30, they told me I’d need X-Rays and a CT scan, and that it will “take hours” to get those tests. This is when my freak out level took an ultimate turn because I didn’t want Hadley and Harper home alone until 12 or 1 in the morning. Yes, they are both teenagers. Yes, we have a dog that kills squirrels and groundhogs, hitting them as though they are ping pong balls. I needed my babies not to be home alone. So the world’s greatest friend left her family so that Jesse could go home, and she showed up in her PJs and with a cartoon of ice-cream, and sat with me while I took all my tests and was released around 1am.

I had a bit of time on my hands this week, and lucky for me, another great friend sent me some paintbrush pens and I’m learning how to paint with those.

The high school seniors have graduated, and for (I think) 30 years, Pioneer High School has set up a Casino Night lock-in in the high school. The place was completely turned into a beach, spa, casino, lounge area with a DJ and food. Some friends and I spent a bit of time helping to set up on Friday night. The one with “Pit Boss” duct taped to her shirt was there from the afternoon until 3:30 in the morning. God bless her. God bless all us mamas with teenagers. Good gracious, we are all so tired.

A trip to the Farmer’s Market for grape tomatoes, basil, and rosemary for our garden. We have oregano and mint that’s lasted all winter, too. Jesse made my Grandma’s hummus to go with the tabouli he made over the weekend. He also made mojitos.

One week later, I put on the same outfit I had fallen in, and went for a run. Same clothes, new story. You know how I roll.

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
