Rough Drafts + Chapel

in Uncategorized on 19/07/22

* definition from Merriam Webster

In Chapel, the pastor tells us we are all rough drafts. He goes on to say something about the manuscript he’s writing or maybe it’s a dissertation. Either way, he knows what rough drafts are like.

The Chapel is mostly filled with students and I look to see if they’re eager to learn this news about being rough drafts. I think I would be, but also, how long can one be a rough draft?

The pastor raises his arms and asks God to make His face shine down upon us. I bow my head and hope the message about rough drafts was meant for me, too.

But I also whisper a prayer I heard Oprah Winfrey once say:

“Jesus, don’t teach me nothin’ new today.”

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.
