A Story of Heartache

in Uncategorized on 01/02/21

If you read yesterday’s chapter, then you know about the “Batter Up” game, which is a game I do not endorse – at all – but admit would’ve been thrilled to know about (and try) when I was 15 or 16.

This chapter is my favorite so far. It is awkward and painful and sad. It’s sweet, too. I wanted to get at the fall of a crush, and of a best friendship. I wanted to show how lovely and painful they both are.

This is all 100% made up, but when I was teaching 8th grade, and we studied fiction, I used to ask my students to look for what’s true. So that’s what I’ll leave you with – looking for, and perhaps thinking about your own stories that are true. No matter how heart-aching they are (the best ones usually are).

Read Chapter Six, “The Hank Aaron Party,” here.

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.
