I’m excited to be a part of a new writing workshop put on through Exhale and beginning this Monday. I’ll be teaching with my friends and colleagues Anna Jordan, N’tima Preusser, and Sonya Spillmann.
The workshop is a storytelling workshop called “Known.” The idea behind the title is this: we know each other because of the stories we tell. If we’re doing that honestly – even when the story is funny or one that’s seemingly easy to tell – this is vulnerable work.
To be known is a vulnerable thing, but I think it’s also a powerful, strengthening force. I think that power manifests itself through story. When we tell a story well, we are not just telling our truth, we are telling a truth to be shared, to be given, to be carried by others.
The course runs from January 12 – February 9. Each week participants will receive reading and writing assignments, stories, inspiration, instruction, and feedback from Anna, N’tima, Sonya, and myself. You’ll also be placed in a group of five, allowing you to build creative bonds that will continue long after the workshop ends.
This is a great course for the writer who’s looking to establish reading and writing habits, is interested in exploring ideas, thoughts, and feelings on the page in order to turn them into stories, and is ready for the communal component of workshopping: receiving feedback.
