Registration for my course, “Writing Faithfully” is open, and I am excited to teach this again. It was my favorite thing to do this year. The writing that the participants did was vulnerable, honest, and well-crafted, and it was an honor to be a (small) part of their process.

The course will run from June 17 – August 12. Find all the information here.

Here’s what a few former participants said about the course:

I walked into the course wanting to explore topics of my heart that I had yet to give language to, and Callie gracefully lead me through them. She never judged me or my writing, but instead, did what a brilliant teacher does: saw the potential in each piece and drew out the good from it. I often felt myself crying as I read her responses, not because I felt discouraged, but because of how aptly and powerfully she encouraged me. When she was drawing out the good from my writing, she was really drawing out the good in me.  Thank you, Callie, for your big heart, your sense of humor, and the multitude of resources that you gave. You were such a gift to me and I will always attribute the resurrection of this gift of writing to you (and God!). I couldn’t imagine opening up about the topics that I explored to anyone more understanding. I am so glad it was you. – Kristine

Taking Callie Feyen’s Exhale course, Writing Faithfully, was possibly the best decision I’ve made this year. Her assignments were thoughtful, inspiring and pushed me to dig into my beliefs and doubts. Week by week, as I read the Bible and completed the writing exercises, I uncovered new layers of God’s story and mine. As a professional writer/editor, my workload is so heavy I don’t often get the kind of detailed feedback on my stories that I received in this course. Callie’s encouragement breathed new energy into my writing life. She is a gifted, kindhearted teacher whose instruction propelled me forward in my craft. Writing Faithfully helped me reexamine difficult moments in my life and find new meaning in them, for that, I’m deeply grateful. – Erin

Callie did not ask us to parrot safe, Sunday-school answers. She asked us to ask questions and take a risk on what emerged. This course was time, money, and energy very well spent. I realized that faithful storytelling is, perhaps, more important than ever, in a story-saturated, cross-pressured world of swirling ideology and narrative. What a purposeful calling! – Megan

And from my colleague and friends who took the time to read through my course (all of them pastors and writers):

Callie Feyen is generative inventor of engaging stories, essays and performance art.  Her wit, wisdom and essential humanity invite her audience/readers to take notice of her broadminded worldview and to listen for her distinctive voice.  Callie’s style is fun-loving, incisive and energizing and chocked full of a sparkling intelligence.  – Reverend Jay Sanderford, First Presbyterian of Ann Arbor

Rabbi Sperber writes, “The question is a great religious act; it helps you live great religious truth.” While many writers have take up questions that propel them to distill the truths of their faith, fewer offer others specific guides for engaging sacred texts and practices in ways that lead them to articulate their own faithful truths with courage and honesty. Callie Feyen’s course gives participants a path to do just that — to grapple with familiar stories anew and emerge with more insightful and incisive questions, as well as a deeper appropriation of their own faith tradition and a greater familiarity with their own voice. – Reverend Dorothy Parks- Piatt

The powerful art of storytelling, specifically our own stories, allows us to make sense of our faith journey in new ways. Through this course, Callie Feyen creates a safe and exciting space for participants to engage in the process of putting their faith into words. The combination of Feyen’s humor, faithfulness and writing prowess make her the perfect guide for this journey. -Xan Morgan, Director of Children’s Ministries; First Baptist Church of Ann Arbor

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
