It was Stasia Savasuk, one of the brightest, spunkiest fashion gals I know who suggested we add something else to our outfit, and this was what I had in mind when I paired the black and white flats with the yellow, royal blue, and brown clutch my mother-in-law gave me a few years ago. I like the idea of adding something instead of taking a thing away.

Hadley and I both finished The Thing About Leftovers this week (a book I highly recommend, especially if you have a preteen in the house), and hands down our favorite scene in the book is the dance scene where the main character’s buddy has a zit so large she’s named it “Ogle.” What strange, lovely confidence a gal must have to not only give a blemish a name, but make up a story about it. “Use what you got,” Hadley said, a statement I tell her all the time.

And if you’re going to read Tough Boris, and I suggest you do, you’re going to want to look carefully at the pictures. It is true he isn’t a nice guy. He is an awful, dreadful, terrifying pirate, and God be with you if you happen to get on his ship. He is bad, but he carries something else with him, too.

So it is with the many layers we choose to walk around with. I think it makes for a better story.

PS – There’s a story behind those black and white flats, and, well, I personally think it’s pretty fantastic. When I sent it in to my editor I said, “I think something’s happened. I think I shook something loose.” She said, “You are magic.”

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.
