I’m A Guest on the Chasing Creative Podcast!

in Uncategorized on 22/02/16

I can’t remember how I met Abbigail Kriebs or Ashley Brooks, but I think our friendship is over a year old now, and while I only know them via the internet, I admire their work and I’m always happy to talk writing and books with them. Ashley is my go-to gal for the business of writing – tweeting, promoting, all the skills I am horrible at. I love her most recent post where she breaks down her content strategy, and I recommend reading her post on the difference between Business Creativity and Personal Creativity.  Ashley’s website is filled with practical advice and encouragement for writers.

Abbigail is my favorite book reviewer. Every time I see that she has a review up, I stop what I’m doing to read it. She will always write an honest review, which I love (I can’t stand when reviewers only say great things about books), and she writes from the perspective of someone who adores reading. Here’s a great one on Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them by Newt Seamander, who some of you know as J.K. Rowling. Abbigail is also a great photographer, and if we were in her neighborhood I would hire her to take some head shots for me because I think I’m going to need head shots soon. That’s a story for another day. However, here is a great post where her photography shines.

I’m introducing you to Ashley and Abbigail today because they have a podcast called Chasing Creative, and today I am their guest. I’m talking about writing and motherhood and teaching and how I manage it all. I hope I said a few things that are encouraging and worthwhile. I don’t think I have a bunch of answers of how I take care of these aspects of my life, but I know I love each of them and try to do right by the stories I tell, the children I teach, and the little girls I am raising. Have a listen, here

It was so great chatting with you, Callie! You’re a few steps ahead of me in the game of balancing motherhood and writing, and hearing how you make it work has been so encouraging for me. I can’t wait for everyone else to listen!

We LOVED having you on the podcast, Callie. I do think your words are encouraging and worthwhile and so many other things. You always wow me with your way at looking at the world, and I can’t wait for you do the same with our listeners at Chasing Creative. Thank you for being you, and for sharing it with the world.

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

Have a look around and be sure to subscribe to the blog. Thanks for stopping by!

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
