The Weekend

cousinsMabel and HarperCougar Dash 1Cougar Dash 2Cougar Dash 3LTYM 1LTYM 2LTYM 3LTYM 4I want to tell you that I think my niece Mabel Day is just the cutest thing in the world.

I want to tell you that Hadley ran two miles in about 25 minutes on Saturday. She ran most of the race with my Dad, doing her best to pass ALL THE BOYS. It was very important to her that she pass ALL THE BOYS.  Later in the day, when we were driving to a friend’s home for a Cougar Dash Bash, she pointed out the route and said, “There’s where I passed (insert boy’s name). Here’s where I passed (insert boy’s name). I passed (insert boy’s name) here.” This girl is a competitor. She comes to win.  I don’t compete with anyone but myself so I’m not sure I’m ready for this.

I want to tell you that I was in the the DC Listen To Your Mother show and oh man was it the best. I had so much fun. I love the women I got to share the stage with. There’s so much I want to say about it but I’m knee deep in thesis writing and I can’t loose momentum so these pictures will have to do for now. As soon as the video is up I’ll post that.

I want to tell you that some of my friends came to hear me and so did my family, and that is just the greatest thing ever. (One of them – AND YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE – left before I could get her picture.)  Thank you, to my friends and family for taking the time out to come and listen to me read. And thank you to my friends who showered me with texts and Facebook messages and the like wishing me luck.  You are all the best.

Thanks, Alison! I asked Hadley if she wanted to go for a run with me sometime since she did so well on that race. She said, “I don’t know, Mama. What I did was pretty hard.”

Looks like a weekend full of memories! And…. You know Hadley just might have a little Aunt Lucy or Tara in her , which may have combined with Jesses spirit … So I fully expect her to shove someone to the ground while playing Chinese ping pong in the basement. You can’t deny it !!!!

Very happy for you. I wound up reading in the OC LTYM show but that’s a long story. I look forward to seeing your video!

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
