Birthday Celebrations

in Uncategorized on 06/03/14

Last Friday was Jesse’s birthday, and as luck would have it, Hadley had a half a day so we headed down to DC for the afternoon.

IMG-20140228-00736Jesse took half the day off as well, and while we waited for him we enjoyed some hot chocolate at Caribou.

We spent a few hours in the Natural History Museum, and that was fun, but what the girls were very excited about was riding the Metro.

Washington-20140228-00745Washington-20140228-00746We walked around the Butterfly Pavillion and saw some beautiful butterflies dancing around.

Washington-20140228-00748Some of us were a little apprehensive about the flapping and the zig-zagging direction the creatures tend to go in.

Washington-20140228-00749We learned how to make a mummy, by far the greatest part of the museum according to the H’s. Just so you know, you guys, you have to take the brains out first before you continue with the rest of the process.  You can’t just bring your gauze and your decorations and expect to wrap a person up.  Stuff has to happen first.

Washington-20140228-00750Here’s Hadley giving the finger to the elephant in the room.  It’s what we all tend to do anyway, right?

IMG-20140228-00751We ended the day at this adorable pizzeria.  Since we’ve lived here, if anyone wanted to know where to get pizza, I’d say Vace or 2 Amy’s but I have to change my answer.  You need to go here.  It’s the cutest place, and when we walked in all the staffers were lined up at the bar talking DC shop over pints.  I recommend the Grove pizza with the spicy tomato sauce, the fresh oregano, and the volpi sopressata. You should have it with a “DC Brau Penn Quarter”. Jesse would say a “Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold” goes well.  Maybe have both and tell us who is right.

The Feyens love the city. Every time we head down there Jesse and I vow to figure out a way to make it our home again.

okay, okay, a little late catching up on blog posts. even before you said how much you loved city life i was thinking how cool it is that your girls are growing up so close to DC since you loved your city life as a kid… and i like that hadley is cautiously hiding the bird so that the elephant doesn’t come stomp her ass. naomi’s reading a book about mummies–i’ll pass on the part about the brains. she’ll like that.

it’s the magic treehouse series. did she read those? they are pretty fun, and since they travel through time, somewhat educational. the third book in the series is “mummies in the morning.”

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
