What’s In My Purse

in Uncategorized on 18/02/14

District 9-20140201-00656This post was inspired by another one of the A Beautiful Mess blog posts.  It’s a terrible picture but I wanted to get my red boots in there because they’re red boots!  What was in my purse at the time this photo was taken is the following: a chevron patterned pencil pouch that I carry with me everywhere I go, two E.L.F. lip glosses, about twenty tickets from Chuck e Cheese, my wallet and cellphone, and a file folder with an essay in it.

I’m standing on the steps of the Hyatt House in Gaithersburg waiting to read that essay in front of Kate Hood and Stephanie Stearns Dulli  the producer and director of a show called Listen To Your Mother.  During the show, people read from five minute essays having to do with, you guessed it, motherhood.

While I auditioned, Jesse took Hadley and Harper on a Girl Scout outing to go snow tubing in Pennsylvania.

I was pretty nervous for Harper. First of all, she isn’t a Girl Scout.  You have to be in Kindergarten and while the troop leader said it was fine to bring siblings, I know that Harper’s been to so many of “Hadley’s things” and I was worried she wouldn’t know where she fit in. Would the older girls know more? Would they include her? Would they be able to do things Harper can’t do yet?

I was also nervous that she might be afraid to go down the hill.  It’s a pretty intense slope if I do say so myself. Would the speed be too extreme for her? What if she falls off? What if she gets to the top and realizes that she doesn’t think she can do it and wants to turn around. Can she do that?

Turns out, she loved it.

She loved all of it.  Hanging out with the Girl Scouts, sledding, the speed, the flutter in her stomach when she was mid-slide, I’m pretty sure it was the best thing of 2014 so far.

I’m glad she did it. I’m glad she tried. Because now, the next time she tries something a little scary, if she doesn’t get it – if she falls, or misses a step, or doesn’t get picked, or what have you – she’ll have this experience to look at.  “See?” she’ll tell herself, “I did that.  And it was fun and scary and I’ll be able to do other things someday, too.”

Adorable. I might be too scared to try that slope though…I’m a chicken when it comes to all things “speed.” I’d rather audition for 10 shows! Anyway – SO glad you chose to audition for ours. Looking forward to working with you!

It’s about an hour away from here, but I can’t remember the exact name. I’ll get it for you, though. My girls LOVED it. They’re still talking about it!

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
