Stray Fortunes

in Uncategorized on 11/02/14

I was reading a post on the A Beautiful Mess blog and the writer wrote about stray fortunes. I like that pairing and thought of  it recently as I cleaned our house, especially as I went through the girls’ room.

Hadley lost another tooth, and much to her delight she lost it at school.  Losing a tooth at school entitles one to a tooth treasure box, and late in January Hadley came home with one to carry her tooth in it. This is indeed a treasure as Hadley’s been talking about this for almost two years.  It sits in her bed.  I thought the tooth fairy took it but it turns out tooth fairies aren’t interested in the treasure boxes.

Speaking of designing….

And here’s another one of her contributions:

It’s hard to be mad, and really, I don’t care. When we move, I’d like to leave the “Happy Me!” on the wall and hopefully another small child will find it and know that for a while there were people here who found and kept a lot of stray fortunes.

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.
