She + She + Us

in Uncategorized on 16/01/14

I’m always looking around for ideas to try for blog posts, and thought this one from Elise Blaha Cripe was a fun one.

District 2-20140109-00614{She} still loves picking out her own outfits and accessories; loves princesses (but also Olaf the Snowman and all her dinosaurs); enjoys listening to books on tape, playing with stickers, painting and coloring, and absolutely adores taking ballet.  For Christmas she got an adorable ballerina doll she named Lulu, and Lulu accompanies Harper into the ballet studio and watches her prance around the hardwood floors under pretty official looking stage lights.

District 2-20140115-00617{She} is not super happy about doing homework, but does stay up late reading books with a flashlight. She’s very into series: Ivy and Bean, Rainbow Magic Fairies, Magic Treehouse, Junnie B. Jones. She hopes this is the year she begins Harry Potter, but I am still holding back. One of the reasons is this: you know the song “Found a Peanut?” She cries at that song. Another reason is this: you know “The Cosby Show?” You know the episode where Clare breaks her ankle? She has to leave the room while holding both hands over her ears for that part. She won’t come out until I say, “It’s over!”  And when she does, she still has her hands over her ears.  I feel like Hadley and I need to work up to Voldemort.

District 2-20140113-00616{Us} Fifteen years ago today these two kids got married. I feel like I ought to explain that what’s on my arm is a fake tattoo (although it is our wedding date which I think is pretty rad).  I also think maybe I should explain that I don’t drink Boone’s and snack on beef jerky. Anymore, anyway. I do like to wear as much blush as possible at all times.

Jesse’s picture is totally true to life.  Everyday he’s all, “Where’s my dip? Where’s my Milwaukee’s Best? Where’s my NIKE t-shirt with the sleeves ripped off of it? You KNOW I can’t work on hurricanes without that shirt.”

We’re all superstars, the four of us.

Hi! I’m Callie. I’m a writer and teacher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I write Creative Nonfiction, and in my oldest daughter Hadley’s words, I “use my imagination to add a bit of sparkle to the story.” I’m a contributor for Coffee+Crumbs, Off the Page, Makes You Mom, and Relief Journal. My writing has also been featured on Art House America, Tweetspeak Poetry, Good Letters, and Altarwork, and in 2014 I was one of the cast members of the Listen To Your Mother DC show.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, and I am working on my first book that will be published through TS Poetry Press.

When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth k When I was in fourth grade, I got my front tooth knock out during a baseball game. I was in the dugout, trying to make a butterfly in the dirt with my shoe. The batter, who’d hit not just a home run, but a grand slam, came running in and everyone cheered and so did I because I’d gotten really good at reading cues for when a good thing happens in sports. I even attempted a high five, and somehow I knocked my face into her batting helmet, thus spending the good part of that weekend summer day in the dentist’s office getting a root canal.

No teeth were lost in this latest incident, but I was lost in a bit of imagining on Sunday when I tripped and fell on Packard while running. I look like I’ve been in a bar fight and my shoulder looks similar to how Wesley’s looked after being attacked by an ROUS.

But I’m going into work today, and when I told my boss I’m nervous about how I look she said, “It’s OK because you have a story,” and if that isn’t the best thing you could ever say to me, I’m not sure what is.

So, here I am with a story. Thanks to all my friends and family who’ve been so kind and keeping me laughing.
