{Baking} All things pumpkin: pumpkin donuts, pumpkin scones, pumpkin bars, bread, granola. Pumpkin pie is coming. That is my specialty.
{Starting} My semester. It’s go time and I’m quite anxious about getting the work done and getting it done well. I don’t know if I can do it. I’m also wondering what life will be like next year at this time without the deadlines and having someone critique my writing. As scary as it is to try to write essays that are worthwhile, I think there will be quite a large vacancy when this is over. Good gracious, I’ll have to rely on myself.
{Trying Not to be Too Excited About} The fact that tomorrow night my girl Hadley will be performing at a Varsity Football half-time as one of the Drill Teamers (they call them POMS around these parts). Those of you who know the Callie of 1990-1994 know what that previous sentence means. All sorts of dreams are going to come true under those Friday Night Lights.
{Laughing About} At Harper’s Back to School Night, her teacher told us that the class is learning about communication. She asked the kids two questions and wrote their answers down and hung them up so we could read them. QUESTION ONE: When do you communicate? Harper: I communicate when I am crying. QUESTION TWO: What do you think communication means? Harper: To dress up or draw and not waste power.
Communicate wisely, folks. Don’t waste power.
Speaking of communicating, here’s what was going on:
SIX YEARS AGO: Oh my goodness, you guys. My first post. I don’t think it was anything great, but the relief I felt in writing it-in creating something out of an overwhelming experience-is palpable. Starting up a blog was like shaking hands with a lifelong friend who knew exactly what you’re trying to say even when you can’t say it so well…yet.
FIVE YEARS AGO: An interesting post because you’ll see that Bear was Hadley’s first. He was hers before Harper came on the scene. On second thought, maybe that’s only interesting to me.
FOUR YEARS AGO: Trip to Starbucks. Like that’s a unique thing.
THREE YEARS AGO: Remember when Jesse left for Germany and five minutes later Harper busted her lip and me, Hadley, and Harper all spent most of the night in the ER? Good times.
TWO YEARS AGO: According to Hadley, here are some things you should never say to someone who isn’t in your family.
ONE YEAR AGO: Homework, homework, gimme a break.
Sarah Wells says
First, whaaaat?! You were a drill teamer, too? Of COURSE you were. It’s like we’re soul mates or something.
Second, a year from now, you and I will still be exchanging essays. So you’ll survive graduating. 🙂
calliefeyen says
Why does this not surprise me at all, Sarah? Yes, soul mates indeed. And yes, we will have to continue trading essays when this is all over. I will NEED the accountability and knowing I’m sending my words to another Drill Teamer? Well….
mallory says
Yeah POMS! so wish I could see it, I’m sure she’ll have a blast!
calliefeyen says
I’m so excited!
alison says
i think my favorite part of this is harper not wasting power. ha! and having finished a residency, i can totally relate to the relief and anxiety of no longer having someone watching over you and guiding you. it’s been eight years and i still miss that part of it sometimes.
calliefeyen says
Isn’t that hilarious? I laughed so hard when I read that. Sometime I’ll have to ask what in the world she meant.
