Harper was born around ten in the morning, and, four years later, on November 9, I was sitting in her preschool classroom listening to her teacher tell me how she’s doing in school. Our conference was at ten and this seems significant but don’t worry, I will not weave in the story of her birth in this post. I will just say that I am thankful to hear that her teacher thinks Harper is a “very cheerful, bright girl, and that she is “comfortable and confident in the classroom.” I’m thankful for a teacher who sees what I see in Harper.
And I’m thankful for all the coloring Harper does. And for the blue Cinderella dress a good friend gave her that Harper likes to wear around the neighborhood. I’m thankful for our lunch dates where Harper tries to figure out how many letters she can make with her arms, and for accidental afternoon naps while waiting in line to pick Hadley up from school. I’m thankful for the color blue (and that I could participate in wearing Harper’s favorite color on her birthday…along with “jaguar” print shoes, another one of Harper’s favorite things) and for a birthday celebration ending in a dinosaur dig. And of course, a birthday cake with blue icing, blue sprinkles, Cinderellas, and blue letters (the candles were blue, too).
I’m listening to Johnny Coles play “So Sweet My Little Girl” as I write this post. His bio on Pandora says that he has “long had the ability to say a lot with a few notes.” I’m thankful for his song this morning.

Happy belated birthday, Harper! I’m one of your mommy’s friends, but I feel I know you and your sister through your mom’s (excellent) writing. Have a great year!
