If you go to Pittsburgh, you might want go to PNC park.
You may find the game interesting.
Or you may want to work on your coloring.
Perhaps running around a little baseball field is more your thing.
You should make sure you check out Peppi’s – a great sandwich shop with black and white photos of people (some famous!) who ate there (some left their signatures!) covering the wall. Don’t go for the pictures. Go for the sandwiches. And make sure you tell your Dad you’re wearing Chuck’s. He would want to know.
If you order the fries at Peppi’s, get them with cajun seasonings. And DO NOT dip your fries in the white stuff pictured below. Never order spicy food and dip it in something that is supposed to make it unspicy. That’s just stupid. I’m pretty sure your dad would agree. Keep them seeds in the jalepeno poppers.
After lunch at Peppi’s, go to the Aviary. You can feed birds.
You don’t like birds? Are you afraid they will poop on you? Sit on your shoulder? Peck at your ear? No worries. Bring some friends and tell them you will take their picture of THEM feeding the birds. Boom. You’re the designated driver. The hero. The memory keeper. They’ll totally OWE you.
There are a variety of birds to see, but make sure you check out the penguins. They are always entertaining.
You are entertaining, too.
The Aviary might tire you out, so you might want to get a coffee at 21rst Street Coffee. This is 21rst Street. It’s part of the Strip District where flowers, baked goods, and all kinds of lovely things are sold. The coffee house is right across from the church on the right. On Saturdays the church bells ring out hymns in the morning while you walk around sipping your coffee. You might not know all the words, but I think they’ll make you happy.
The coffee will make you happy, too. Their espresso drinks are made with Black Cat Intellegentsia beans – the best beans in all the land. And they brew your coffee one cup at a time. No, not with one of those Kuerig cup things. It’s a slow, wonderful process and you will make friends with the baristas while your coffee is being made. It’s OK that you’re shy. Talking about coffee makes you unshy. Trust me on this one.
You cannot leave Pittsburgh without going to the Carniege Museum of Natural History. If you are 3 or 5, or Ross Geller, you will want to do a dinosaur dig.
The dig will be the only thing you’ll want to do at the museum.
It’s important work, after all.
You might need a coffee after words. I know just the place.

I feel like I am a blog stalker, because I am often the first one to post on your entries. Darn email notifications, make me look psycho.
Anyway, I love, love, love the picture of you and your coffee. Because it is such a “Callie” expression.
You do such fun things with your girls. I really hope they have your amazing memory, and if not, at least they have the pictures!
Valerie says
Oh good, Mindy was first.
calliefeyen says
It’s because you’re a rockstar, Valerie. No stalkin’ about it. Besides, I WANT you to come by!

Thanks for the memories! We used to go to the aviary and the museum when we lived in Pittsburgh when I was a kid. They really were great! (But I think the dinosaur dig is new!)
calliefeyen says
It’s a great city, Jennifer! I would definetely go back. The dino dig was fantastic. The girls loved it!

OMG! I love this post to pieces.
Having just read your guest post on The Artist’s Road (and read about your daughter attending Kindergarten Sneak Peek today), I adored seeing photos of you with your family. Your girls are special! I tried to pick my favorite photo but they’re all classics! And so sweet the way they’ve got their arms looped while they watch the penguins.
We live about an hour from Pittsburgh and I’ve written a few travel stories on it myself, but you covered some things I haven’t seen yet. Wonderful. You make a great “travel agent.” 😀
