We went to see the play Alexander’s Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day last weekend at Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park.
To get to the theatre, you take a very pleasant walk through the woods, and across bridges. It’s lovely and genius because by the time the kids have walked along the path and oohed and ahhed at nature, they’re good and zoned out to focus on the play.
Oh look! Harper ditched the Diego vest. Progress! But the tights are too small, yes? I pick my battles.
Hadley thought this was a giant cupcake (a girl can dream, can’t she?).
Maybe they serve cupcakes at their art shows.
That’s all the pictures I can show you. Understandably, you can’t take pictures during the show, but it was a great performance. The girls loved it and insisted we read the book before bed that night.
We went with another family and afterwords got something to eat at a nice market that makes BLTs the way I like them: no mayo and really crispy bacon. I would’ve taken pictures of the seven of us all together, but it’s a tricky situation with new friends when you write on a blog.
“Uhhh, do you mind if I take this picture and put it on my blog?” I may as well hike my pants up to my armpits, whip out my pen and notebook, and jot down notes about the BIG LIFE EVENT that’s happening while we eat our BLTs.
But in some ways, it was a big life event. The kids warmed up to each other nicely and by the end of the afternoon seemed like good buddies. The women in the group are both writers (we know each other because we’re in a writers’ group), and the men are both engineers who know a little bit about H2O. It seems like nothing short of a miracle when small children play while their parents finish a few sentences for a time.
If we get together again, perhaps I’ll take some pictures. For now, I’ll just write that it was definitely not a horrible, no good, very bad day.
